(1927-1994)

Hungarian Painter, Illustrator, and Printmaker

Adam Wurtz studied art under the Hungarian artists, Hincz Gyula, Bortnyik Sandor, Por Bertalan, and Charles Koffan, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Hungary. After Wurtz graduated around 1853, he continued his studies abroad. Wurtz exhibited his art in Hungary, Japan, Russia, Romania, Vienna, the United States, and elsewhere. This Adam Wurtz etching and engraving entitled, "Dream" hails from his mid 1880's New York period. Awards received during his artistic career include, the Munkacsy Prize (1957-1966, 1970), Biennial Golden Pen of Beigrade (1968), Summer Exhibition Award, Szeged (1967), Artist of Merit in the international Commission Andersen Award IBBY (1986), and others. He was a member of the Creative Union of Artists and Engravers. During his career, Adam Wurtz also illustrated a number of books, such as, "The Giant from the Little Island" (New York, 1970), "Marti Grunbarts Abenteuer" (Budapest, 1974), Peter Brenner, "The Tears that Saved a Town: A Story" (London, 1975) Miklos Vamos, "Zenga Zenek" (Budapest (1983), Sir Walter Scott's "Kenilworth" (Berlin, 1979) and many other fine illustrated books. His original art is today included in the following collections; Princeton University Library, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Gutenberg Museum, Germany the Hermitage, Russia, the Puschkin Museum, Russia, the LaGuardia Community College, New York, and Miscolci Galeria, Hungary, as well as other important private and public institutions. The art of Adam Wurtz contains strong elements of both Surrealism and Primitivism. This is evident in this original etching entitled, "Dream". It hails from a portfolio of four large etchings created by the artist at the Pratt Graphics Center, New York, in November, 1985. Each etching was published in a limited, signed edition of only twenty-five impressions. Generally these etchings explore the artist's fantasies and emotions in relation to his dual life in New York and Hungary.
