German Painter, Printmaker and Sculptor


Kathe Kollwitz, born 1867 in Königsberg (modern day Kaliningrad), is one of the most important German artists of the 20th century. She addressed social and personal issues and applied them in her drawings, graphics and sculpture. Kollwitz, known worldwide for her graphic work, depicted the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class, portraying the unvarnished reality of life of the people in her immediate environment. In 1919, she was the first woman ever to be admitted to the Prussian Academy of Arts.
