TOM COLEMAN

(b.1945)

American Ceramist

Potter Tom Coleman was born in Amarillo, TX. He trained as a ceramist at the Northwest College of Art and Reed College where he began developing his craft as a hand-built potter working with both porcelain and stoneware. He throws pots that are both functional and expressive, and his training in the Japanese tradition has led him to focus on beauty, symmetry, and balance of form. In 1983, Coleman began working with Frank Boyden, throwing the pots that Boyden would then decorate with his incised drawings. After three years of collaborative work at the anagama kiln in Oregon, Coleman moved to Nevada in 1987. The he continues to work out of his studio and gallery located in Henderson with his wife, Elaine Coleman.

Tom Coleman’s work is featured in a number of different galleries, including a 2003 solo exhibition entitled “Desert Landscape” at the Nevada Arts Council Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has written much on the subject of ceramics and has himself been the subject of much published review.
